Montage: Activity 4

The first image is of an artist's hand drawing the Eiffel Tower. The significance of the hand coming out of the sky signifies God's masterful hand creating a beautiful monument. Similar to the political montages, the image is composed of different images that when combined, create a captivating photograph. I believe the message is that the Eiffel Tower is beyond compare in beauty and elegance that it must have been created by God, and the image portrays this theme perfectly.

In the second image it is a montage of pictures of cars on a highway with a massive bridge, and a hall or museum of pictures. The image appears to be never ending when the viewer looks into the distance it seems to duplicate itself into infinity. Similar to the political montages, the image is composed of different images that when combined, create a captivating photograph. I believe the message of this image is to appreciate life and art around you and not just pass it by with our speedy day to day lives.

Montage: Activity 3

As editors exercise their ever-increasing power over information control, what limits would you impose on them as to the extent to which they can manipulate the photographic image?

The limits I would impose on the editors would be a common code of ethics. If the image is being altered to an extent that it's offensive to the subject(s). Also, if the manipulated photograph is slanderous and false advertisement to an unknown public, that should be controlled. In order to secure these rules, there are some guidelines that can be constructed. All negatively manipulated images should be labeled as a manipulated photo, as well as images that could influence younger teens. All images that will be available to children or teens should also be labeled as manipulations.

Montage: Activity 2

• Find two examples of political photomontages that are either from a historical or contemporary source. 
• Discuss in what context they have been produced and how effective you think they communicate their intended message. 
• Discuss the techniques that have been used to assemble the examples you have chosen and offer alternative ways that the artist could have put over the same message.

The first image is composed of many elements. Hitler is watering an oak tree which is growing bombs as well as hats that have swastikas on them. The message that is conveyed Hitler was the source of the mayhem of the war and the Holocaust. He started the chaos, as well as fuel the fire, or in this case, watered the tree. I believe the author communicated this message perfectly and clearly.

The second image that I chose is simple. It is composed of only a few elements. It is a photograph of a dove being slain by a dagger. It also has text on the bottom, "Niemals wieder!" which is German for "Never again!" In this image, the dove symbolizes peace and the dagger represents ending that peace and that there shall never again be peace in the world. Only chaos and destruction. I believe the drama of this picture makes it effect. The bold element of the lifeless dove makes the image so much more

Alternate ways the artist could have conveyed his message is by using different symbols of peace instead of a dove. Such as, a peace sign or different nations being united. As for the other image, the artists take on Hitler was ingenious and creative and he could of taken a more simpler route such as having Hitler ordering his soldiers around, but in my opinion, this is more effective. Montage: Activity 1

• Briefly discuss why you think painters of the Victorian period might have criticized these early photomontages and why the pictures were popular with the general public. (This technique of piecing together separate images to create one picture is again very popular with both artists and the media). 
• What two reasons can you think of for this revival of an old technique?

Painters during the Victorian period might have criticized these early photomontages for many reasons. They are abstract considering the art that was around at this time. Also, the Victorian period was very strict and conformity was at an all time high. The general public would have appreciated the freshness and how different they were. The revival of this technique can be attributed to the easily acceptableness of photoshop as well as how the photographer can use themselves as the subject, bringing amazement to the reader.

Self Image: Activity 3

Being a young teen, you are faced with many factions that influence your personal image and perception of what it means to be beautiful. For this reason, every girl needs a role model, someone to look up to and admire.

One of my role models is my cousin Tiffany. We're 2 years a part and even though we don't see each other that often, I've always looked up to her for her beliefs, morals, and beauty. She is one of the strongest people I've ever met and I'm really proud of her.

Do you believe that media images or public opinion are responsible for the characteristics of beauty becoming universal stereotypes?



The characteristics of what beauty is has evolved over time. Media such as advertisements, magazines, movies, and television shows influence the characteristics of beauty. Beauty is sometimes stereotypical amongst celebrities, but in everyday, many people have become aware of the negative influences of what the media depicts as beautiful. Media images are responsible for the characteristics of beauty becoming universal stereotypes; however, opinions also play a major role because beauty is in the eye of the beholder.


Do you believe people admiring media images of glamorous models can do any harm?


I personally believe that excessively admiring media images of models can do harm. Girls who aren't comfortable with their bodies look at magazines and wonder why they don't look like that. However, girls and boys compare themselves to people they see in real life. It is a humanistic trait and takes years to learn to control. Media enhances the speed in which young teens become aware of their body and that becomes harmful.

Self Image: Activity 1

1. Age/Generation: I am a teenage girl, and this picture portrays our generation because the expectations are that we just gossip and text people. And this is accurate












2. Gender: Women are usually depicted as the less dominate and delicate. This image of Rosie the Riveter shows that even though I am a girl, I am just as capable as a boy. 

3. Race: Being white brings many stereotypes that a lot of people aren't even aware of. Girls are perceived as if we believe we're better than everyone else, that we're dumb, and that we don't have any sense of priorities. These stereotypes can be harmful to ones self esteem and self perception.

4. Religion: My religion is Catholic. I was taught to always be thankful for the things that I have, and to treat others how I would like to be treated. I don't think religion defines people. It's the type of person you are, and if religion is what thrives you to make a change, then so be it.    

5. Class/Caste: I see myself as being in the middle class. My family is average and I think I see myself as being apart of the average working class, but eventually creating a better life more my future family.

6. My Personality is ambivert. This means I have a balance of being introverted and extroverted. I am made up of a little bit of both, so it's the best of both worlds.











7. Intelligence: I would describe myself as fairly intelligent. I chose this picture because Elle was never taken serious and wasn't thought of as smart because of how she dressed, talked, and her hair color.

8. I don't affiliate myself with any particular party. It's not that I don't care, I just haven't decided what party I belong to.

The image on the right has the subject in focus, while the ball is blurred. The subject is portraying a sharp composition.









The photograph on the right is similar to the one above. This similarity is that the subject of the boy running is sharp while the background is blurred.












The image on the left was taken while the basketball was spinning. Therefore, the image is blurred.

The photograph is different for the second one because the subject is inverse. This means that the subject is blurred and the background is sharp, or in focus.

Landscape: Activity 5

The above image portrays depth of field because the two rocks not only frame the composition, but they create a natural pathway for the eye. The viewer's eye would gravitate towards the stream, but then notice the trees in the background as well as more rocks. Depth of field is important because it allows the reader to focus on different elements that make up the composition.

Landscape: Activity 4

The left image is a closed landscape because the tall trees cover the majority of the sky, and there is not much else to the picture. The image on the right is an open landscape because the viewer is able to see the sky, trees, water, and rocks. It has a larger aperture as well, which allows there to be a larger scenic view. The difference between the two photos is the left one was taken at a portrait angle and you can only see the sky through the branches of the trees. Open landscapes are used when the photographer wants to capture a wider scene, not just focus on one particular tree or building.

The two images are similar in perspective. Both pictures are taken from the same viewpoint. The painting appears to have more rocks, as well as a more animated and exaggerated color scheme. The photographer is able to capture the shimmery clearness of the blue water; however, the painter is not able to do this effect. In addition to this, painters have more space to be creative and portray the image as it appears in their head. Both images capture the beauty of Lake Tahoe, but I believe the photograph does a better job at being realistic, and therefore, has the better picture.

The image captured is of a broken dock that is leading into the ocean. The photographer is trying to convey the path of life as treacherous and that you will get broken along the way. Also, the ominous mountains in the distance signify the great unknown feeling of not knowing what each day on Earth will bring.

The photographer uses leading lines to capture the readers eye and draw them off into the distance. Both images take place near water, which is a symbol of renewal and rebirth. The gleaming sun in the distance is a beacon of hope for the future.

The slow shutter speed allowed the carnival ride to be blurred. The photographer may have had difficulties with timing, lighting, and people walking in front of him because it was a public event.

In this image I see an overview of a city. However, the main subject is the giant cross, which, as the viewer looks closely, is a graveyard. I believe the image is art because he uses techniques such as rule of thirds and leading lines.

The image to the left is a finger popping a bubble. Some difficulties the photographer might have encountered would be getting the bubble to pop at the precise moment the shutter went off. The only light source for this photograph is the sunset. This allows the subjects to appear only as silhouettes. The photographer used a larger aperture because it was taken later in the day, with a darker light setting.
